As a result, the body produces antibodies that inflict cell damage, most commonly targeting joints, skin, kidneys and the nervous system. I found out later it was due to an (untreated) SLE/MCTD-flare-up and eventually it stopped. I have to floss and brush at least twice a day and get a deep cleaning (which goes under the gums) every 4 months. My dentist said that much of it is due to the dry mouth that I get from my medications. Join the group and find support for coping with lupus. My (private) dentist knew about it though, he looked after a few SLE-patients and he told me to be particularly careful and clean my teeth a f t e r ever meal, even if I had a little snack, just to make sure the flare-up in my mouth did not cause my deeth to deteriorate further. I followed his instructions and came out of this flare-up with my teeth unharmed. My dentist also gave something that looks like a pipe cleaner and another gadget with a rubber tip. It's a lot of work but the gum disease is under control. I wake up with a dry mouth, and go to sleep with it.

Lupus is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system cannot distinguish between threats like viruses and bacteria, and healthy cells and tissue. Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America. Possibly Pink gums around teeth are usually healthy gums but just because they are pink where you can see doesn't mean that you don't have gum your dentist can confirm whether or not you have it. 75% of adults have some form of it and those who don't go to the dentist for preventative care are nearing 90+% incidence.

My gums (in my mouth) have been getting inflamed and sore... I keep a bottle of water with me at all times, but there are sometimes I can't get to it (like when I'm singing at church), and my mouth, lips, throat all get very dry. This may be a silly question but does anyone have problems with their gums from Lupus? I have used all the dry mouth rinses, etc, but they really don't do much.
