Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

People with MS aren’t the only ones at risk for PML. Other disease conditions that elevate one’s risk include HIV/AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, lupus, leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, lymphoma, or other cancers. Organ transplant recipients are also at risk. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. It's interesting that methotrexate is sometimes used to treat multiple sclerosis, but folks who use methotrexate MUST supplement with extra Folic Acid at least 1mg daily to avoid the toxic effects.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

I took Plaquenil for suspected Sjogren's syndrome for over 3 years. It did absolutely nothing for symptoms that evenutally would be diagnosed as MS. This is just my personal experience and you didn't say which connective tissue disease you had so this may not apply to you. I was seeing a rheumatologist who did every test possible from lupus to MS and rare diseases in between. No firm diagnosis. At one point, my hair was falling out and I was feeling very tired and brain-fogged so the rheumatologist prescribed plaquenil which is a drug used in malaria, for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The infusion center is in my neurology center and they treat mainly MS patients. There were several phone calls and patients present asking about the risk and postponing their infusions. The nurses and doctors all agreed that the risk of stopping a DMT is a pretty good chance of a debilitating relapse.
