    Plaquenil and liver disease

It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

Aminoquinolines may concentrate in the liver. Isolated cases of abnormal liver function and fulminant hepatic failure have been reported. Therapy with aminoquinolines should be administered cautiously in patients with hepatic disease or alcoholism and in patients receiving other hepatotoxic drugs. Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. The New Zealand Dermatological Society recommends that to decrease the risk of retina damage, no more than 200mg of Plaquenil should be taken a day, and a dose of 400mg per day should be taken no longer than a few weeks. Several risk factors may increase the likelihood of retinal toxicity from Plaquenil such as, age of greater than 60 years, daily dose more than 6.5 mg/kg; use of the drug more than 5 years, obesity, preexisting retinal disease and, renal or liver failure.

For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

  4. My ALTs and ASTs have been normal ever since, and I was able to cut my lupus medications back to just the basics – plaquenil, low dose maintenance steroids and folic acid. Although now the long-lasting near remission is ending, some new rituxan infusions may be in the works. However, liver enzymes have still been behaving nicely so far.

My doctor called and said their was a slight change in my liver numbers. He said it is nothing to worry about. I was wondering does plaquenil affect your liver? If any of you experienced this please let me know. Thank-you, JK Tell your doctor if you have any of these conditions psoriasis, porphyria, liver disease, alcoholism, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase G-6-D deficiency; Do not smoke while taking antimalarial medications, since smoking actually reduces the benefits of these drugs. In fact, people with lupus should not smoke at all due to their increased.

Survival after Massive Hydroxychloroquine Overdose - N. Hydroxychloroquine overdose is infrequently reported and the majority of recommendations come from the greater experience with chloroquine poisoning. We report two cases of massive hydroxychloroquine poisoning 20 g in each case, both of which received advanced cardiac life support and a treatment regimen consisting of sodium bicarbonate, adrenaline and potassium.

The Risk of Retinal Toxicity with Plaquenil The side effect that is of greatest concern is retinal toxicity. Retinal toxicity of Plaquenil may manifest itself with subtle disturbances of the retinal pigment epithelium which may eventually lead to complete destruction of the macula in the form of bull’s-eye maculopathy.
