I have just spent my first month off my Plaquenil after over 15 years. My doctor is concerned about my retinas, no change yet, but my total use has been 1400 grams. The second week I was off, I developed shingles, caught it, took the medication and it went away. I also have been on methotrexate.4 ml/week. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress. It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects.
