  3. I recently started taking plaquenil for my arthritis which I have had for many years. I also drink red wine and typically have a couple of glasses every day or other day. I have not noticed any side affects but was still wondering if this is not advisable due to possible reactions. Also I take over the counter iodine

    Hi there I was just prescribed Plaquenil. The doctor didn't say anything about alcohol use, nor does the bottle. But I read the literature that came along with the pills and it says to "avoid alcohol" due to liver problems. Mg 155 mg base to 400 mg 310 mg base PO per day, administered as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Antimalarials and/or glucocorticoids are of benefit and may be used for the treatment of SLE without major organ manifestations; however, judicious use of hydroxychloroquine is recommended. Alcohol can also suppress your immune system making your more susceptible to whatever bugs are going around.
