Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Hydroxychloroquine 6 mg/kg/day, max 400 mg/day is routinely used at the onset of disease in children and adolescents with SLE to reduce symptoms of fatigue, mucocutaneous manifestations, and alopecia, as well as a steroid toxicity–sparing agent. Efficacy of antimalarials in SLE has been demonstrated in clinically stable adults, with removal of the drug, resulting in increased incidence of disease activity. Aug 22, 2008 I had some issues with the plaquenil, nausea and extremity swelling. My rheumy told me that he has never had anyone have leg and hand swelling on plaquenil but he does not doubt it is from the plaquenil. I'm off the prednisone and must say that I am working on adapting to the plaquenil because I can tell it is helping. The prognosis for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus SLE has improved significantly, with 20-year survival now approximately 80% owing partly to effective treatment. SLE treatment has evolved from the use of conventional drugs such as hydroxychloroquine.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

  6. Anabolic steroids are sometimes used by weightlifters and other athletes to increase strength. Steroid medications work quickly to decrease the swelling, warmth, tenderness and pain that are related to inflammation. They do this by lessening the immune system’s response. Plaquenil, the trade name for hydroxychloroquine, is a medication used for the treatment of malaria and also, in some cases, in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid. Inhaled corticosteroids are frequently used, but occasionally individuals require oral steroids for adequate control. However, oral steroids are frequently associated with severe side‐effects. Chloroquine has been suggested as a useful 'add‐on' therapy to oral steroid treatment with the aim of reducing the dose requirement in such asthma. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Plaquenil is available in generic form.

Plaquenil & Weight Gain/Loss - Interesting! I had been losing weight fairly rapidly and without trying before starting on Plaquenil - and it stopped after a few weeks of taking it, as did the alarming hair loss. I had no idea Plaquenil could be a weight gain culprit. I've been on Plaq for 4 years now, and weight gain is a problem.
